Chalk paint is average in price, but sticks to anything and requires no prep. Just clean and paint. So you eliminate cost of primer and sander/sand paper. You want to do a wipe on poly or something after to protect.

There are some 1-coat, durable paints now. Check with your paint store or Home Depot/Lowe's paint dept. I don't think you'll need to sand unless current finish is gloss or damaged. There are no-sand primers available. Ask for recommendations at the paint dept. Whatever you choose will require your time, effort, & $$, so do it right the first time!
