It depends a little on the type of orchid. Some cannot be split easily. Others, however, like cymbidium orchids for example, can simply be split by using a shovel and trowel. Simply "cut" through the roots entangled with each other they should be strong enough not to take too much damage. If you are too unsure in how to do it, there are a few videos on Youtube.
