My question as I watched these grandparents was always, "Why are you sweeping your yards, and why is there no grass around your house?" We have grass around ours.
Use a power washer. It's quicker and easier! After it dries for a couple of days, stain it and it will last you a long time!
QIF you are not careful the power washer will splinter your wood. If it has small sinterthat may harm your kids I would sand and restain.
Power wash. Faster and easier. Let dry a couple days, then stain.

Does it really need that much attention? I have seen people that have them in their back yards for years and they don't need that kind of cleaning. All I have seen them do is hose them down each spring.
