The Garden Frog with C Renee on Jan 22, 2014Permanent or movable? Permanent you could use a small dresser for storage. Seal the top of the dresser with many coats of food prep polyurethane. You could also use tile, metal, or even granite. You could also find 1 or 2 cabinets and screw together and find something for a top (such as an old table, piece of granite, etc). for movable you could attach heavy duty wheels on the bottom of a dresser so you can move the island out of the way. You need 36" (average for code) of space around an island. You could also do this with a base cabinet, or small vanity that you find. Drawers in a kitchen can be a great addition for towels, cooking/baking supplies, spices, etc. A cabinet can also store/ place to hide appliances and other things that clutter up your counter. In many stores you can find small islands in a box to use too. Most seem to run around $100-150. For a unique and custom look, I would scour the back aisles of home stores for clearance, yard sales, or thrift stores for anything that can work with the area. (have measurements with you so you know what will work). good luckHelpful Reply

Jeanette S on Jan 23, 2014Almost any chest can be attached to a frame to which you can put on wheels to make the island movable...it is a big advantage to move this around...Put dividers in the drawers to separate utensils. Take out the lower drawers to use as shelves. I like a butcher block top which you can attach hooks under the edge to hold some pans if you have room. You can even make a couple of book cases to the height, length, depth you desire and attach them together on a rolling frame. Then use baskets on each side.Helpful Reply
