Do you want a Walmart pond or a Nordstrom pond?

A Walmart pond is a plastic tub or an exposed liner with a rim of flat rocks and a pump laying on the bottom. They require time and effort to maintain and are of questionable aesthetic quality. A Nordstrom pond is designed and constructed to look natural and work with nature to maintain its health. It has a skimmer and biofalls filter or a wetland filter, the proper amount of plants and fish and is aesthetically pleasing.

What you might want and what you can afford are, of course, two different questions. So what is the one thing people on a tight budget can do to make their pond work better?

@Douglas Hunt Thank you, Douglas. You are correct, not everyone can afford a Nordstrom pond. :)
  • proper filtration will make it work better

Use plants and rocks artfully to avoid the "ring" of rocks or whatever around a pre-formed pond and add a small upper pond full of plants where the water can flow through for filtration and fall into the main pond. It still relies on a pump, which isn't ideal but it's inexpensive, attractive and doesn't require much expertise. Also--don't overstock with fish!

well, we didn't have a nordstrom budget and bought a plastic pond kit from home depot on sale and with a little ingenuity, some extra rocks, and a lot of creative planting around it created a very nice water feature. It attracts frogs in the summer, and we have now have two resident turtles (they vacation now in our basement over the winter), and last summer we added some fish (unfortunately, some were eaten by the local wildlife). It can be done on a budget, depending on your expectations.
  • I understand wanting to build a pond on a small budget. One of the issues is the cheap pumps ( or sump pumps) actually cost more than the high efficiency pumps we use in our ponds. The electricity used out costs the price you would pay for a quality pond pump. I equate it to buying a $5000 hot tub. It will cost you more in the long run than the $10000 one both in electricity and maintenance costs and time. I can build a $6000 pond that will be almost self sufficient , provide more enjoyment and cost less over time than any plastic tub pond.
