This I can answer because I've done it..I used to make Christmas ornaments out of them, but you can make any kind of decoration, for any holiday, including birthday's. I put the pretty shiny side down and the side that has the writing on it is the side I decorated. Depending on what you want to make, Christmas, birthday, I've used contact paper with a matching theme, say balloons for a birthday, outlined the cd, dvd, to size peeled the paper and placed that over the print or even a scratched up side, then with all the little things you can get at craft stores these days, mini balloons and gift boxes, some pretty ribbon, if it's a birthday you can even add a photo of the birthday boy or girl, for Christmas I used a silk Pointsetta flower, cut the stem and leaves off (small size) some craft glue and glued several flowers with the leaves (again covering the yucky side) first with a red or green contact paper, then gluing the flowers and leaves some babies breath, add a pretty ribbon with a bow to hang it, or again mini gifts(you can make yourself with cardboard and wrapping paper, a mini Christmas tree..The shiny side is beautiful when the lights reflect on it. You can even decorate both sides..The possibilities are endless, once you get going. Like the ocean. Small seashells glued all around the edge, with a beach themed contact paper, starfish and bigger shells, mini boats from your craft section..Everyone I made one for just loved them...Let me know if you use this idea and how it came out...Good luck
When I was younger I would take string and the free aol discs and create a hanging thing. Sandwich the string between the discs.
Another thing I did was use them as coasters, you can decorate, put felt on the bottom, etc.
You can use alcohol to clean the CD or DVD. You can get a piece of felt material, ,any color. Glue the felt piece to the side is written on. On the other side you can use etching paste. There is a gift for any holiday or birthday.
My idea is similar to @AngelaCosner's. You need 12 strands of thin crochet yarn, preferably with silver or iridescent threads running through it, 48" long each; 8 shiny cds; any glue, white or clear; 12 or more tiny toy animals, fairies, unicorns, ballerinas, etc.; a hook for hanging. Take the 12 strands, then fold them altogether in half, so there is a fold at the bottom, like a skinny U. Take the folded end and tie a knot as close to the fold as you can. Glue two discs back to back, shiny sides out. Take the cut ends of the yarn and separate them into two sets of six, and take any six--don't try to match the original ends. At the cut end of each set, tie a small tight knot so each set will pass through cds. Now, thread the two ends one at a time through the first cd couple, and shimmy the cds all the way to the bottom knot. Go up about 5", tie a fat knot, thread the next cd couple, and repeat twice more. Tie the top knots together for the hanging knot. (!) Now, you can glue three of the little creatures to the top of each cd couple, spacing them about evenly around the rim of of the cds. For even more shine, paint the creatures some metallic color with paint or fingernail polish. With $1 polish bottles you can get sparkles and crazy metallics. And you can even glue some of the creatures to the undersides. This will please tweens and younger, and some teens, too! Best wishes 😇
not exactly decorating, but strung together and hung in gardens they scare away birds and animals that my want to munch on your veggies or flowers.
You can make mini-dishes by softening them in the oven at 200 degrees, place the printed side up on a heat proof cup, place in the warm oven until they plastic melts enough so that you can form it [press downward with a pair of tongs to shape]...once you have the shape you want...remove the cup & 'dish' from the oven to cool. Once cool, turn the 'dish' over, decorate the exterior & glue a piece of felt over the hole in the center. The mini 'dishes' can be used to hold a mini garden or a house plant as a special gift for someone. [a clear plastic lid off a deli container can be placed underneath it to protect the surface it sets on]...these mini dishes can hold treats/snacks or be used as coasters [glue felt onto the bottom & cut a clear plastic deli container lid for the inside & secure it with silicone sealer made for kitchen/bath]
