If you aren't too sold in repairing your countertop, go to Home Depot and buy Rustoleum Countertop Transformations. Fill in the rip with epoxy, let dry and sand. Next, apply the countertop transformations over your old laminate. It will look beautiful and make the countertop stronger.
I agree with Angelique...my Formica countertop in my laundry room rippled and cracked from spilled chemicals. I scrapped the chips off and filled in the gaps with silicone caulking and smoothed it out with a trowel. After it dried, I sprayed a textured paint I found at Wal-Mart over the entire counter top and backsplash. After allowing it to dry overnight, I sprayed three layers of satin polyurethane - allowing each coat to dry in between applications. It looks amazing and performs well. I think it looks better than the original Formica! Happy DYI-ing!
