Best way I have noticed was sanding it , or you can use a stripper. But if you use a stripper make sure you have gloves, mask and also would hopefully do this outside over news paper or a drop sheet.
Are you refinishing a piece? A chemical stripper will work, or just sand it off.
That is a tough question, Deb. There are lot's and lot's of products that claim to remove gloss. We just tried to remove gloss off a dining room table; we sanded (by hand and sander) gloss still there. Tried to strip it, nope that didn't work, eventually, we painted it brown. The rest of the table is chalk paint off white, so it looks great.
