No. There is no paint or finish that will hold up under wet conditions on a regular basis.
Yes, you can, but I would paint,seal, each board, spraying would be better, with (bottom boat) marine paint. Caulk all joints. It will require constant maintenance just like a boat. The boards aren't sitting in water, the water will run off, but you have to make sure all edges are sealed, caulked..basically no water can reach bare wood.
I just ripped out a similar installation. In my objective opinion, only go this route if you want a project that needs continuous ongoing maintenance like your deck.
I wouldn't do this in a shower.
