Depends on what exactly you're wanting to caulk. The calking I've done came with patience. Pointedly: Make a very small hole in the tube and put less of a bead than you think you need, because you can always add more. Then " WATER " for me is the cure. Do Not try to use any utensil other than a finger. Wet your finger, start at the top or one end of where you've beaded the caulk and evenly draw the caulk along. (Actually, I feel that spit has more of a control on smoothing than water).
Kate they make a small hand tool that you use on the caulk you place to smooth it out. You can get it at Lowes, etc. I've also seen guys just use a moistened finger and have achieved the same results.
Put painter's tape around the area you want to caulk and then carefully pull it off after you have smoothed it out. http://myblessedlife.net/2011/05/how-to-caulk-straight-line.html
