Prevent pipes from freezing

Jeanette S on Jan 23, 2014Wrap these pipes. They make molded plastic that just slips on them and are taped. Open doors to plumbing under sinks, push back shower curtains. DO NOT lower heat at night if you are in a danger zone! You can even open the opening to the attic and let in some heat there. A really big heating bill is a LOT cheaper than repair bills.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jan 27, 2014Pipes that run in ceilings of garages are often at risk of freezing and not providing enough hot water due to cold. You need to get to these pipes which is a task in itself and wrap them with heat tapes and insulation. Or simply pack more insulation such as cellulose in the ceiling areas directly around the area of the pipes to assure that they will not freeze.Helpful Reply

Christine on Jan 27, 2014I have heat tape on mine in the garage. Can you access the pipes? Get this stuff at Lowe's or HD. It comes in as small as 6' long. You wrap it around the pipes and plug it in. It's not a thermostat on it, so it can be set as low as 45 degrees. Around it, I have the foam pipe wrap to keep that heat in. Solved all my frozen water pipe troubles.Helpful Reply

Josephine Howland on Mar 03, 2016I agree with the heat tape we have it on ours. Also make sure there is adequate insulation between your garage and the living space. A home energy audit could point out other areas that could use improvements.Helpful Reply
