Loud Banging Metal Noises in House

There is a loud banging/vibrating metal noise near our fireplace/chimney, from above either in the attic or roof. Our chimney has a screen cover so I don't think it's an animal and when the noise happens, sometimes the water is running and sometimes it's not so I'm not sure if it's the pipes. Also, the furnace was not turned on. The noise doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's usually every day for a few days and only during the daytime.

We have a woodpecker that drums on our metal chimney cap. It's very loud and sounds like a vibration. That may be what you have too.

@Emma Taylor Thank you! That could definitely be the culprit as we have woodpeckers all around us.

Do you have radiators? Banging could be from hot vs cold in radiator piping. Best solution. Drain the radiators. Be very careful, in the winter when furnace is on water is very hot. I suggest if you can, wait til.spring when heat is off. But, take your radiator key..open each radiator one by one, not all at the same time. Put a large pot or bucket under radiator spigget. Drain the water until it really slows down, it's going to be ugly rusty. That's normal. When water slows, take your key tighten spiggett back up, go to your next radiator..and so on, until you've purged all of them..again if you do it now it's going to be scalding hot water coming out. Careful!!!!

@Beth Sanfilippo Thanks for the info, but we don't have a radiator so I don't think that's the problem. The weather has been nice here so we only had a space heater on and the electric furnace has been completely off.

It was definitely a woodpecker. When the noise began again, I ran outside to look, and there was a woodpecker on the chimney cap. Thanks for all the help!
