How do I know my soil is right for the planting I will be doing?

I have planted decorative grasses and they flourished for about 2 years and then died. I replaced them with rhododendrons and they have died as well so I believe my soil is compromised in some way. I live in PA and where I am planting is close to the road which does get salted in the winter months and I believe this is my issue but how can I be sure.

What I would do is take your soil to the local nursery, first. They can test it and let you know if there are any soil issues including or beyond the salt.
