It blends a room together. A lot of homeowners are of the opinion that an 8 foot ceiling is too low for crown molding. But there's varying sizes, if your have a lower ceiling you can just install a thinner crown so it doesn't overcrowd the room.
It generally makes the ceilings look higher- I love the look!
