How to protecting brass nail heads when painting upholstered fabric?

I have 3 barstools that I want to fabric paint. They have brass nail heads all around the bass (decorative). How do I easily avoid getting the chalk paint on the brass nail heads?

Carefully cover them up with good sturdy tape.
Cover them with petroleum jelly. It will make them shiny when you carefully clean them off. (You know the better way is to remove all the nails and other hardware, then the seat covers. Do your painting and sealing, repair any padding, then replace everything, using new hardware if needed.) Best wishes 😇
