Take the time to do a good weeding then use Preen.

If there is enough space between perennials, and the weeds aren't too tall, you can lay newspaper or cardboard over the weeds to kill them. You must wait though to plant annuals. Otherwise, wait until after a rainy day to pull the weeds. Then lay newspaper, plant annuals and mulch over newspaper.

Weed it in sections so that you can put the Preen down right away. root born weeds will have to be pulled as the come into the garden from the sides as Preen will not get those weeds, it is for seed born weeds and prevents germination of weeds only. It also will not be effective for tree seeds since they aren't weeds until they are in your garden. Otherwise Preen is a god send for controlling weeds and will definitely reduce your upkeep time significantly.
