mold can cause a variety of serious health problems. you say it's thick mold... thick layer of mold ? i'd advise seek professional help. that would be best. but if you are determined to tackle it yourself. WEAR A FACE MASK. WEAR PROTECTIVE EYE COVERING. WHAT A WOODWORKER WOULD USE. use a strong hand-held vac. go over entire surface a number of times. that should remove the layer. next use bleach soaked paper towels. press against surface HOWEVER......depending what type of material ceiling is made of, mold may have permeated deep. then the only solution is total replacement

Sorry, bleach is not going to help do anything more than disinfect and remove color from the mold! You need vinegar to kill the mold , spores and all! First spray the entire room with a 20% vinegar solution, allow to dry , then scrape or vacuum the ceiling, Spray again with vinegar solution and dry, then paint with a good sealer - texture - paint.
