Are you sure you want to paint and not stain?
has your deck every been painted or stained before or is it new wood
What material is the deck made from? The type of timber, or steel, or plastic boards will determine the paint system to use.
You have a choice of oil for timber only (which needs to be recoated every 6 months to keep it in good condition).
A polyester clear coat that will last 12 to 24 months but eventually flakes off (it has an orange or brown tinge due to the oxides used as a UV protectant for the timber.
Then paint - Oil or Enamel and Plastic or Latex paint which lasts up to 5 years or more, this requires different techniques for different finishes.
Good luck

Highly recommend stain plus add Shark Grip to keep it from being slippery when wet.
