A forest ranger came to check out this same problem for me. He said to spray the trunk...all around and from up high down to the ground.....with malathion. Then put more dirt around the base of the trees....mine are huge, old oak trees so they needed the dirt around them. The Ranger said the tree will recover, which was my biggest concern
