Unless you want to strip, stain, and varnish while sanding between shellac coats ( the proper way in most cases) it's possible to add a protective shellac on top of many finishes if you give it "tooth," which is sanding a bit to give the shellac something to grab onto. There are products now that you can cover almost any material and make it a paintable surface. Shellacking is best in a clean area where dust and moisture can't get to it. Some like to apply the shellac with a paintbrush ( type depends on oil or water based shellac) some a paint pad, sponge brush, or clean cloth. It depends on the shellac you use. The label should help. Sand between coats, good luck!
