Vacuum the fireplace and then wash it down with white vinegar.

I just redid our fireplace. It was that horrible 60s orange brick. I mixed one part chalk paint to three parts water and painted it. It turned out great and made such a difference in the room. I used a cream color.

If your fireplace is full of ashes, you need to use a dustpan, broom and bucket to get all the ashes out. Cover the hearth, the floor and anything else you can with drop clothes or big sheets of plastic. Wear old clothes and an air filter mask and use an old broom. Close the damper. Start as high up as you can reach and slowly sweep and scrape the soot out of the fireplace. Take your time and keep the dust settled. Dump the bucket every time it gets full. Then vacuum. This is a filthy job, but you can't paint the inside until your fireplace is clean, either by you or a chimney sweep, who will clean from your chimney down. Then you need to wet clean the fireplace. The hearth will need to be cleaned and polished. And that's it for the cleaning. Best wishes 😇
