How to repair a French polished surface?

An antique trunk (here in South Africa it is known as a "kis") which was French Polished (dark finish) now has a water mark ring that looks like it has gone down to the wood. I don't want to use wood stains or tinted oils on it, but don't know how to French Polish just the damaged area to match the rest of the surface. I'd be grateful for advice.
