prime coat all walls and ceilings with zinsser primer first, and it can be tinted to be close to your finish color choice and then final coat.
First you need to wash everything and I mean everything. Use TSP, hire a service if possible. Good luck!
i would wash them with at least soap and water then prime.
We had a long-term tenant (greater than 10 years) who smoked up a storm. When she moved, TSP made quick work on all of the walls. We ultimately painted using a coat of Kilz, followed by paint. We pulled kitchen flooring and carpeting, and used TSP on the subfloors before putting down laminate. Oh, how wonderful everything smelled once we were done!
But get in there with a bucket o' suds first! Remember the light fixtures, windows, any curtains or rugs, and certainly the walls and floors. One solution my sister used after her husband died was dog shampoo. It cut into the nicotine pretty well. She had to wash down every bookcase, doodad, dish, and door. If your next renter is a smoker, you know what you are letting yourself in for. Best wishes 😇
Vinegar & water.. mix 3 parts white vinegar to 1 part very warm water.. No, I didn't get that mixed up. The vinegar needs to be stronger than the water. Then, since you're dealing with walls, put that mixture in a bucket & either wipe'm down with Magic Erasers -or- use something similar to a push broom (like the kind you'd use to wash your car). If you have carpet floors, make sure there's something covering them. Hope that helps 😊
Me again.. make sure you wipe the big moisture off the walls, after cleaning, or your drywall could get ruined
TSP cleaner! Trisodium Phosphate. can be purchased from just about any hardware store in the paint dept. It's a professional strength cleaner/degreaser. A 1 lb box is about $5. It makes many gallons. Best cleaner EVER! Been using it for 30+ years
Easy...wash walls with a vinegar/water solution will help with the smell too
everyone, thanx for all your help on the nicotene problem. TSP is the route we'll take in cleaning the apartment. And special thanx for the carpet comment because I wouldn't have thought of taking it up and treating the subfloor.
On hard surfaces, we found that ammonia cut the tar/nicotine like a champ.
Add some Lavender oil or Eucalyptus oil to warm soapy water to get the room smelling fresh
No one said it, but do the ceilings!
