vaseline around the base
There is a plastic cup with a hook on the top (hang from the porch)and a loop on the bottom (hang the feeder from). Put water in the cup, works like a moat.
Every time I take the refilled feeder outside to hang, I take a cup of water also, refill the ant cup, then hang the feeder.
Here are variations on that same theme . . .

I put heavy grease or Vasoline on the chain or wire hanging the feeder NO ANT'S
Boy do I have the answer for this it's called Perky Pet Ant Guard and it's available on Amazon. Here is the link http://amzn.to/2sHTzbd I use this on my hummingbird feeder and no ants, GUARANTEED.
Perky Pet is a great source but you can also find hummingbird feeders that come with a water moat. It screws to the top of the feeder and attaches to the hanger rod. I think mine is a Perky Pet but I got it on Amazon.
Thanks, everyone. Have seen the commercial add-ons and DIY water moats, but they either don't "blend in" well enough around here (I live in the middle of a historic Colinial era property which does frequent tours) or I couldn't keep the little water moats from drying out given my schedules. Will try the Vaseline approach for the feeder along with a hummingbird garden planter I just got at a local nursery and hope one or both work for the season.
I use the Vaseline , it works terrifically!
I just had the exact same problem! So...I smeared some Vicks VapoRub on the pole around the ground and up the pole about 5 inches. Works like a charm! Now if I could only find a way to keep the bees away?
