old Wood Hydrangeas
1
Prune out any dead, damaged or crossing stems at the base of a mophead or lacecap hydrangea (H. macrophylla) or an oakleaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia) any time with pruners, loppers or a pruning saw, depending on their diameter.
2
Cut out one-third of the longest, thickest stems back to the ground after the plants flower in midsummer and before they set bud in August or September. Repeat this each year to completely rejuvenate the plant within three years.
3
Cut back remaining stems to just above a set of buds anywhere along the length of the stem when you prune just after flowering or to the next set of buds below the old flower in early spring.
Things You Will Need
Tip
Endless Summer type hydrangeas, hybrid mophead varieties, bloom on both new and old wood. Prune back faded flowers by half the length of the stem.
Just trim it here and there after the plant blooms.
