I went on the manufactures website to order the part when this happened to mine. You should be able to put the door in place - locked and just not use till the part arrives.
I was lucky. Lowes had one that worked with mine.
Before you spend a lot of money trying to fix this, have you considered upgrading the slider to a new vinyl sliding door system ? Your door looks like it is 30 years old or older. The new vinyl doors are quite an improvement.
slide-co.com is a good source for parts. http://www.slide-co.com/home4.wcs?nMenuid=270
If you don't have any luck there. A rock was thrown through my slider years back. We called a window repair company, they may have parts.
You can also try salvage yards as they have loads of older parts for things & the guys that work there are usaully have heaps of knowledge on older things & so many different things so I would Google Salvage Yards around you

Good
I had the same problem with my door, fortunately a small hardware store in town had them. I had gone every where to find them, but like you no one had them. So 2 hours later and 30 miles i could have gone 15 min. away and got the part I needed.
Great place to get the things that no box store will carry because the turn over is not profitable. At this one you can get horse shoes to shoes for people. Truly a gem of what use to be, "Friendly, personal attention" and you don't have to know the name of what you want.
I moved to Florida a few years ago, sliding doors everywhere, lol. The house I bought was older for my area (28 yrs) and the doors really hard to slide. I found a company that only fixes sliding doors! I have 32 feet of sliders, 16 ft (four 4-ft doors) off living room, 8 foot doors off 2 bedrooms. For $600 they came, removed the individual glass doors, re-worked all the hardware, rollers, rails, handles & locks, then re-hung them. They now just about slide with a touch of the finger. You might consider researching if there is any company like this in your area. It would have probably cost me at least 10 times more what I paid to have had to replace them. Good Luck!
