Need help with a sturdy, but ugly, kitchen floor.

Does anyone have experience painting over a ceramic-tile floor? Ugly floor, but high-quality, well-laid tiles. I want to use grout to even up the seams, and then paint. But this will be a first-time floor project for me. Clearly I'll need to somehow rough up the porcelain surfaces so that paint can adhere; not sure how to do that. Any advice?

  • I have never seen painted tile on floors last. Porcelain is made to be durable and can take the abuse of foot traffic and collisions with objects falling to the floor. It is labor intensive but changing the grout color could easily update your look. Otherwise, you could lay a new floor (such as hardwood, laminate) on top of the tile if you do not mind a height difference between the areas. A rug could also change the look like using runners could spruce up the tile too. Good luck.

Thanks, Renee. Not the answer I wanted, but I appreciate your candor. I suspected as much.
  • Ann McNattin, you can simply change out the grout colors that will change the look of the floor entirely. There are stains that are made just for this type of project. Any good quality tile supplier can suggest methods and products that will help you. But Renee is correct, although you can paint tile, it will not last long on a floor. And once painted it will be almost impossible to remove it.

Thank you so much. I have a tile store in my neighborhood. I'll ask them about this. I really appreciate your advice.

I have painted a backsplash before but never a floor tile. My concern would be it will scratch off in time. But I just spent 2days on my belly painting grout lines on 1500 sq. ft of ceramic. There is a product by polyblend (see pic) called GroutRenew that paints over old grout to freshen it up. They suggest using a toothbrush which was far to wasteful and messy. I simply used a craft paint brush and it looks fabulous. It even concealed some of those chips that happen to floors over time. I love the new look.
