Pulling them up is the best and safest way to get rid of weeds in the garden if you wish to avoid chemical treatments.
I agree with Molly Anmar - good old-fashioned "elbow grease" is just part of owning a home and garden - weeding every week and not letting things get on top of you, is the answer! On a warm, breezy day (with no humidity) I actually enjoy spending time in the garden, weeding and feeling the soil in my hands. Gardening is great for stress and so rewarding when you look at the results of your hard work! :)
Preen works on emerging weeds but you have to pull up existing weeds first.
Pull'em up or cut'em down to the ground, either way is fine, but once you have done that take a thick layer of newspaper (at least 6 pages thick) and cover the area, PLUS a bit extra, where you want to kill the weeds. Weight the paper down around the edges with bricks or large rocks and wet them down with water. Next cut up cardboard boxes into sizes slightly larger than the wet newspapers and cover the papers with the cardboard, using the rocks/bricks from the papers to weight down the cardboard. The idea here is to block out any possible light that might encourage growth. The damp earth under the papers will allow moisture but without sunlight the weeds cannot grow. Hope this helps "put a damper" on your garden hindrance ;)
Mix a little white vinegar and dish washing regent spray the weeds
mix white vinegar and dishwashing detergent in a spraybottle and spray the weeds 2 or 3 times.
1 gallon white vinegar and 1 cup Epsom salt and 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap Combine ingredients in
spray bottle and treat weeds at the hottest time of day for best results.
I pull them up, much easier after the rain.
