How can I install a faux fireplace in my living room?

I want to install a completely non-working, but as authentic looking as possible faux fireplace in my living room. I miss not being able to decorate a mantle during the holidays. I have a reclaimed fireplace surround from the 1940s, but not sure exactly the best way to install it specifically to ensure as an authentic look as possible. Suggestions?

  • Great project! 40's was a great time period too. What is it made of? I was thinking you could attach it to your wall with some sort of construction adhesive, as there is literally a glue for just about any application out there.

It's made of pine, but first I will need to carefully strip layers of old (and I'm pretty certain lead) paint. I will be able to attach the surround to the existing studs so the surround and mantle will be secure, it's the firebox part that I'm not sure what to do with. I want it to look like a real fireplace/firebox maybe that's been closed up, but just not sure how to do that on a budget. I could purchase an old cast iron cover, but those are way out of my price range. Any ideas from anyone?
