Toilet sounds in our new house

The toilet in our new house is continuously making random (2-3 second) sounds of the tank filling with water, even when it is not in use. Anyone have any idea why or how to remedy this annoying situation?

  • sounds like you may need new guts. If the tank keeps trying to fill then there is a leak in the guts of the tank and/or the ball in there is not floating like it should. Nowadays you have to change out the guts every couple years because of hard water and use. It is not hard to change out the guts and if you want a tutorial go to Youtube. Good luck

Our house is new construction (7 months old), so we decided to contact our builder rather than try to handle the issue ourselves. Thanks for the information though, it may prove handy in the future!
  • The flapper that seals the tank from the bowl is either out of alignment or the flapper has sediment on it. Being a new home, most likely the flapper is out of alignment. Water is seeping out past the seal. The use of toilet additives that you put in the bowl will cause this to happen sooner as the chemicals tend to soften the rubber causing it to fail sooner.

Ours was doing the same thing, we had to replace the inside of the tank. And now the hall bath is doing the same thing, so this week-end guess hubby will get to work on that one, but our toilets are 20 yrs old.

I believe the water hose that refills the tank should be about an inch above the water level in the tank. Just a thought.

if this is new construction call the builder,,,,, to check if there is a leak, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank.. wait a few minutes and it will tell you-- just think how much water you are using,,,,, it will make a difference on your water bill..

The float is lifting the flapper. Try bending the float wire down so it keeps the flapper more firmly on place. Our toilet randomly flushed too, this solved the leak.

Had the same issue in my last apartment. You want to make sure your hose is above the water level.
