No matter how much I wash the dogs the house still smells like dog. I vacuum and clean their bedding frequently. Any ideas? I do not have wall to wall carpeting, only area rugs
many thanks Nan

As a groomer, I can say some people wash their dogs too much, causing excess oil to be produced to counter the oil stripping. I wash my dogs once a month, with a castile soap, feed them a corn, wheat soy free diet and you will not have that 'doggy smell'. If they are hairy beasts, a good brushing with a slicker once or twice a week keeps them clean. Short coats, I use a rubber curry. If they get muddy or roll in something, I just rinse them with water or wipe them down with diluted vinegar if they encounter something distasteful.

When I was prepping my house for a carpet cleaning, getting the St. Bernard hair out of the carpets was critical. Apparently if you don't deep clean the carpets before their strong chemicals are used, you'll end up with a wet dog smell to your carpets. I followed the guidelines and vacuumed every carpet about 20 times, each time in a different direction. I knew I was done when I went in a pass on every direction and there was finally no hair coming up. After that, the rug doctor process from your local grocery store works great. Good luck!

Clean your vacuum, the smell stays in there forever! I had two golden retrievers (lost one a couple of weeks ago to illness) and use a product called carpet fresh to stop the doggy smell In my carpets, the bonus is it also freshens the vacuum. I know when it's time to reuse the product as I can smell dog when I turn on the vacuum.

Cleaning the vacuum is so important! It really does hold the odor

There is a special spray you can put on them afterwards called Burts Bee's deodorizing spray for dogs. They stink for a while because the towel just can't get them completely dry, but blow drying is not recommended as it can burn their skin and , if their skittish , give them a heart attack .

When you wash their bedding , use hot water and add a cup of vinegar . If semi-wet and stinky pooch is jumping on the furniture , you can mist it with a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water .

If you haven't done so already, buy a hepa filter to absorb the dander and to me I noticed that helped to remove some of the odor. It is very important to clean vacuum too.

Yes, definitely definitely clean the vacuum! You can also add a few drops of essential oil to water and spray for some freshening up now and then.

I wash all bedding in hot water with Gain detergent and

bleach. For rugs and furniture, Resolve Carpet Cleaner for pet odors works miracles. I have a central vacuum system, so don't have the stinky vacuum problem.

You have a lot of really good ideas already given. Here's one more. Set small bowls of baking soda or carpet cleaner around the room & under/behind furniture (so pets & kids can't get to it).
