Don't give up! We are here to support you! Gardening can be frustrating, but it's a lifelong project that you get better at as time goes on. Also remember how satisfying it feels once you get a project done and are able to see the finished product and say "hey, I did that". For me, it helps to see on Hometalk that other homeowners are experiencing similar troubles that I am, and to see how willing everyone is to help each other out.
On a daily basis, multiple times a day actually, I visit my garden and flower beds to see the tiny bits of progress each day. Seeing that keeps me going. Also, I have found raised beds much easier to tend too. In our area old fence boards are easy to find and the nearby cotton gin has mulch from last year's hulls for free. Mixed with bagged soil it makes a wonderful blend that grows a mean cucumber. It becomes satisfying watching the little cucumbers and tomatoes develop. If you're trying to grow many different veggies maybe cut back to a couple of your favorites so they are easier to maintain. Like Shoshana said, "Don't give up"
I know what you mean. I grew up with grandparents and parents who always put in a garden. So I got used to having the fresh produce whenever we needed it. However, we no longer do it on the scale they did. Also, I planted in containers on the patio this year. I planted 3 tomato plants, some basil, and some parsley. I am Italian and the fact that I love to cook with fresh ingredients is probably the reason that I still plant at least these 3 items. Also on the patio I can water them myself, not worry about critters since the dog takes care of that, and so far my little patio garden is doingng amazingly well. I pick from the bail and parsley almost every other day.My suggestion is to think of what you can handle, no matter how insignificant it may seem. The satisfaction of growing anything can be quite rewarding. Hope this helps.
I just have to remember that what comes from the store is full of chemical and who knows what. Also the taste of home grown is so much better. I have cut my garden down in size this year. Used to grow 100 square feet now I am down to a manageable 50 and it seems to be working.
There is something so satisfying in the accomplishment- you got this!
Thank you everyone for your great comments and ideas.
Sounds like I wasn't alone in my frustration.
