How can I layout my furniture in this awkward room?

I know it sounds like a lot of work but you could measure and draw out the room and all furniture to scale. Then cut out all the furniture pieces and label them. Now you can move them around on your room drawing. This helps me to see how everything would look without having to move furniture 50 times! I use grid paper and one grid equals a foot in my drawings. Also add in all windows and doorways when you do your drawing and measuring. It is a lot of work but I use that drawing over and over because I get tired of furniture always being in the same place!

i would start by placing the tv on the wall that currently has your sofa...make that wall a feature wall with built ins or ship lap or rustic wood...whatever fits your style, then have the sofa and chair positioned midway in the room, whatever gives you the best viewing distance . Leave sufficient space to get to bathroom and patio doors. Create a relaxing nook by the windows where you have the tv to take advantage of the sun...wing chairs and a table for example. As your sofa and chair are quite large, you'll need larger pieces for proper scale. Build or buy a large armoire to be placed near the door for outerwear storage. Cosy everything up with matching drapery panels around the windows and patio doors....the don't have to close/function just unify the space. The coffee table doesn't really suit the furniture you're keeping, a chunkier or more rustic piece would work better.

Move your couch away from the wall. Since the room is so big, you can use it to provide a cozy area to watch TV. At the front door, hang a wall coat rack on the wall and if you need more storage, add a free standing coat rack to the side of the door. You need some color, choose a color palette that you love to add to the room. Once you choose your colors, you could paint the walls, add wall art with the same colors, decorative pillows, light curtains (if you want them), or an accent rug. To get my inspiration for a room, I find a rug, pillows or artwork that I love and work in those colors in the room. If you want some sort of closet, the only place I see it going would be over by the bathroom. I wouldn't put a traditional door on it but maybe a bi-fold or sliding door. If not, you could get a coat tree or have people keep their jackets in their rooms. For shoes, there are shoe cubes you could get to put under the window, beside the door. I would swap the TV and sofa and leave the recliner where it is.

I would be inclined to move the couch to the opposite side and have it away from the wall with a sofa table behind it. Much like the beautiful room that Cindy posted. TV down where the couch used to be. Add bench storage near the door. Since your husband likes the coffee table, paint it. Black where the gold is and get a textured spray paint from rustoleum and paint the bottom to look like stone. you could also paint the glass to look like its frosted. Try and get a bookcase for the front door area to hold shoes, or even a small dresser. Could also hold hats and gloves.

I love the train set!! The windows give a lot of lighting, too!! This is just a suggestion and different perspective that I have, after reading all the other great suggestions. I would move the TV to the wall you haven't shown in your pictures. (if I'm looking at the pictures wrong, I apologize, but I don't see the full picture of your glider). Then move the couch to the wall with the sliding glass doors, but away from the wall. Then move the lazy boy where the couch is now, but angle it toward the TV. This way, you can watch your TV in front of you. I think the fireplace will eventually ruin your TV, (heat), so after you move it away, the rest is going to fall into place. I hope this helps you to decide.

I love all the ideas, thank you. I have a lot to think about! What I should have done was ask your help before I put in the gas fireplace!! I will post my results..

see my sketch. the woofer can be placed underneath the end table by the couch. wooden coffee table and end tables can be added, or paint what you have, as a previous contributor suggested. adding a narrow plant stand in front of the slider side that does not open would create softness, as would white sheer curtains that you could opt to close/not close. add curtains to windows also. pot belly stove, sliding door and plant stand could provide living room focus, while adding a book case or small dresser on wall next to bedroom hallway door would create focal point when entering the home. you could provide candles, family photos, "welcome to our home" sign on the bookcase/dresser for warmth. armoire next to front door would service coats, shoes, boots. throw pillows and blankets on the chairs and sofa are warm and inviting. i also like the idea of artificial vine plants along with possible small christmas lights on your overhang, especially over the front television wall. that would visually soften the overall wall, with all the hardware. don't forget lamps on each end table. a tv placement tip: whatever the diagonal size of the television (42"), multiply that by 3 (126"), and that is how far your seating should be from the tv.

i also like the tv where you have it because not only is it not the focal point when you enter the room, but it also alleviates any outdoor sunlight reflecting on the screen.

I love your ceiling treatment, I would install LED lights up there on a dimmer so you can create some ambience.
