It won't hurt your yard and certainly not the chickens but look out plants! My daughter has now confined her girls to their pen because they made such a mess in her mulch and feasted on her plants
well it works both ways in 1 they eat bugs & scratch at grass 7 weeds so that is a help, & their droppings also are rich & good for the soil - the down side -all that poop IS IN your yard & you will undoubtedly will end up with it on your shoes , Soooo think about it
If you have a safe place for them to roam, away from the road and predators - it should be fine. But they still need a place to roost at night and to lay eggs.
My hen house butts up to the end of my fenced in vegetable garden. I have a door on the back of the hen house to allow the chickens into the garden when I do not have plants growing. They are a big help in eating unwanted bugs and cleaning up the garden for the next season of planting. When it is garden season, I do not let them in.
It depends. They will eat every bug in your yard if you let them roam, but, they will scratch up you beds. So if you have small seedlings in your flower beds and vegetable garden ,I would keep them out.once the plants are big enough you can let them roam.
Aside from what's already been said, you have to keep your chickens safe. If they free roam, will they be safe from dogs that can jump your fence or dig under it, wild critters and also hawks from above??
Happy chickens lay sunny eggs...I'm sorta joking. Do you live in an area that has poultry predators? Highway close by? Don't let the cuties out. Insect, rodent infestation? Let em out. My only problem doing that is they congregated on the stoop and pooped.....a lot
they will find a place to roost but u never know where they will lay their eggs and they will poop all over.. even on your car, your deck deck chairs they do not care. good luck! dhall
Anything and everything you need to know about chickens, I would recommend going on the very informative blog: The Art of Doing Stuff. My parents raised chickens (when I was very young) and they were kept in a good sized, enclosed area. They had lots of room to roam about but were safe from any harm; foxes, coyotes, traffic, etc. The enclosure, of course, also had a large coop to sleep in at night.
make shure they can't get out
