Clean all of the old wax off of the tiles. Make sure all the old tile is stuck well to the floor. If it is loose, so will your new tile be loose. If your existing tiles are asbestos, it is best to not disturb them by sanding or chipping up. When all finish is off, (I use straight ammonia) and the floor is rinsed well and dry, you should be able to put down your peel and stick tiles.

Make sure the old tiles are spotlessly clean so the new tiles will stick well. Also, if there are gouges or gaps in the old tiles, fill them with joint compound and sand them after they dry so they will not show through the new tile surface.

In addition to the above, you may need drywall mud to fill in uneven spots or places the tile broke this way the new floor will be even.

Whoa, how old is the tile? Old linoleum-type floors have asbestos, which is dangerous. Google it. Strangely, if the asbestos tile is not cracked, chippedI or sanded, it's safe(r). This is one time to get a professional opinion.
