We extended our patio with pavers laid in sand. Looks great. I have seen where some people who want to recycle use planks from pallets.
Put down a layer of small gravel and then a layer of sand...then your pavers. The gravel will add drainage and support and the sand will give the pavers a smooth surface to rest on, plus help keep them from sinking into the ground over time.
