My parents put in fake beams years ago in their family room. They were maid from some kind of lightweight Styrofoam and were still there when my Mom sold the house 30 years later. They still looked brand new and they really looked like they were made of solid wood. I was in School the day they were installed so I did not see how the builders installed it. You should be able to find something at home improvement stores like Home Depot, Menards, or Lowes.

If the cracks follow a line, it could be where 2 pieces of ceiling material meet. To make faux beams, any size you want, take rough wood (or smooth), boards and make a 3 sided box, paint or stain, then install over the cracks. If you use rough sided it will look more like a beam. In my sister in law's trailer. Her's are a litle differentIt had the 2 sides, then a string of lights, with a pattered plastic "glass", it was sort of a beam but addedambiant light. That could also cover your cracks.
They make some really nice faux beams that are made out of Styrofoam, they have wood grain, come in many colors and are very easy to install and cut. i would look at those first
Susan CastilloHometalker - PICTURES would help. If this is a vaulted ceiling then you will need some kind of backing at the top of the vault to secure your faux beans to. The faux beams that are made out of Styrofoam will be the lightest to work with depending how high your vaulted ceiling is. Real wood will be the heaviest and will have to be secured very well. You should be able to find Faux Beams at your Big Box stores like Home Depot, Menards, Lowes, or your local builder supply store. Do not forget that you will need scaffoling to reach the vault safely.
