I have a similar desk and the same question! I think I will try sanding it first.
try old English, it will hide a lot of marks on wood.
Give it a light sand, then paint with chalk paint.
Sand first and I agree, chalk paint is the way to go! Good luck!
Definitely chalk paint! Easy peasy :)
