Dig as mush as you can and cover it up with black plastic.
I use the Bayer spray for woody plants - Ivy, blackberries. It usually only takes one spray to kill them. Be patient and make sure the spray has traveled down the stalk before you pull or dig the root balls out.
vinegar is a good solution. I use it to kill poison ivy and it works fast.

This is just the thing! I find this works wonderfully. You have to cut down the weed and then brush this on the top of where you cut it. Bonide
