Why do annuals that require 6+ hours of sunlight always croak?

I have four hand rail planters that receive the morning to mid-day sun. I purchase annuals from Lowe's and always look for the ones that require 6+ hours of sun. I plant them and fertilize them and keep them moist as stated on the plastic tab. After about 1 week they seem to be fried. Very wilted and dying. What am I doing that is causing everything I try to shrivel up and die? My location is in Beaufort, SC.
Thanks for any help that you can give.

After planting how long were they in the pots before you applied fertilizer?

Is there adequate drainage? A lot of planters now days don't come with the holes predrilled or don't have but one that isn't enough. Could your plants be too wet?

I fertilized after planting and there is plenty of drainage.

It may be that the planters you are using are shallow and dry out quickly. Check to make sure the plants are not drying out too much between watering. I live in Myrtle Beach, and literally have to water some of my potted plants twice a day during the hotter months. You might consider adding mulch on top of the soil in the planters as well. It will help retain moisture and keep the soil much cooler for the plant roots.

Drainege is the key here I think. Best of luck!
