Hello Ctnaka; It truly can be overwhelming. What I personally do is I try and look at my yard with a critical eye.
I look at it, the way that someone driving through the neighborhood would.
I try and stick with plants that work well where I reside. Also, native plants are perfect.
At least two days a week, I work on the areas in my yard that I think need extra care.
An easy solution for you might be to hire a teenaged youth, whom wants to earn some money. That is a sure fire way to get some of the overgrown vines, weeds, etc. taken care of.
For the most part, I try and leave insects along, unless they are harming plants.
I have found that I have an abundance of Butterflies, Birds, and other Beauties on my property.
Take your time and slowly work through your yard. Decide what to keep and if you dislike something ask around, as someone else might want to have some of the plants that you no longer want.
I hope that this helps you!!! Take Care.
I hear you! I was greatly relieved after a large pecan tree in my yard had to be cut down. I didn't realize how much time I was spending cleaning up the various things it dropped on the lawn. After cleaning up the leaves or nuts I was out of time and energy for mowing the lawn. Perhaps there are places where you can simplify the chores and have a little more open space to enjoy by removing some of the more work-intensive plants.
Hi C, I live in Florida and find I had the same problem! I decided, instead of planting flowers and gardens, I use container gardens. Minimal weeds there! My back yard is literally sand and tropical plants. I did have a problem with vines but took the time to pull them out by the root. It was a lot of work the first year, but now I only have to do it in the spring! I found the key was containers. I tend to over trim my trees this time of year because of hurricane threats and find I only have to do that once a year now too! As far as insects, make sure they don't have a water source. This is especially helpful with mosquito's!
Hope this helps!
I’d try to eliminate the high maintenance plants if possible. If that’s not possible, I’d make a note on my calendar to remind me when I need to do yard maintenance, whether weekly or monthly, to keep it all under control. I’d also makes notes about what work I completed and what needs to be done.
I have a very large piece of property as well.I also created portable gardens in some unkept areas. My theory is to take on one section a t a time. Here we fight many leaves that get compacted in the shrubs trees etc.Perennial grasses are to my issue. Not being physically able to keep up,this year I did exactly one small section a day.Now just about finished with colorful containers I take my time and feed, the plants and spray for insects.
