The Garden Frog with C Renee on Jan 26, 2014You are on the right track Betty. Score the drywall along the ceiling and the wall where it meets now (existing closet). Knock a hole with a hammer and start pulling the drywall off. Now pull the nails out or take the screws out that may be in the 2x4s. If you have a reciprocating saw (you can even use a handsaw for the exercise) you cut in the middle of the 2x4 so that you can pull them apart and pull them off the other boards. I find this easier as a woman to do. LOL You will need a pry or crow bar and take the 2x4s off the ceiling and floors. You may need to use the saw to the nails to get these off. Or they may come right off. Framing is simple. build the frame (a box so to speak) on the ground measuring twice to be sure you have the right measurements. What you cut first are the top and bottom 2x4s that will come out from the wall first (for a closet about 24" or so and is your depth of the closet). You will have the measurement for the ceiling to floor so you will subtract the top and bottom 2x4s and cut the support or upright 2x4 =this should equal the height from floor to ceiling. Stud walls usually have 16" on centers so you will need a board another upright between those 2 outside studs. Corners that join usually have 3 2x4s so with that in mind your second frame for the front of closet will join the new wall with the 3rd 2x4. I am not sure how you are going to do the front but the framing will have to be done so that you can attach to the existing closet. I hope this at least gets you started. If you have carpet in the room you want to save, then I would gently pull it up and carefully cut it so you can pull it away from the closet. If you have hardwood floor then you will have a gap where the old frame was. It is not hard but take your time and always measure a few times because once you cut that board too short, you know, it won't grow back LOL Good luck and I hope I helped~no pictures or measurements makes it a bit difficult.Helpful Reply
