I would either plant a ground cover (like vinca) or just put down a couple of inches of mulch solely to remind everyone to be careful walking, playing, mowing, etc. I would do everything possible, of course, not to bring damage to the tree.
Yes in fact mulch is your best option. Don't get extreme with it one to two inches is plenty and won't harm the tree.
agree mulch is best idea - and you can add a couple of inches -- every year-- to acclimate the tree to having it's roots covered... eventually it will STAY covered etc.
mulch is used to cover roots all the time. You shouldn't put more than 1-2 inches covering the roots. It will help make sure the tree still gets what it needs.
