Certain Palm plants require a lot of sun, but I've had Palm plants that require shade and just light!! A Sago Palm likes full sun and is spikey and hardy.

You could try using self watering pots. If you fill them just before you leave for a day or so they should be well watered when you come back. I have some of those pots and my plants do really well that are in them as they stay moist consistently and don't go from dry to wet to dry like other pots do. I have parsley, basil, two strawberries and three hibiscus plants in the self watering pots and they are doing exceptionally well. I lived in SW Florida for five years and the weather here in the summer rivals Florida with the heat and humidity, we just don't have warm weather in the fall and winter that you do. I remember many times running around in a light jacket during the winter when everyone else was in winter jackets and coats and being looked at like I was nuts until they were told I was from Minnesota.
