Start with a big glass container, either with a lid or with a small opening. Put a layer of charcoal in the bottom. You can get a little bag of the right kind at Home Depot. Then your regular potting soil, add your plants and tamp the soil down around them. be sure you choose plants that need the same care and like humidity. Slow-growing is good too. I always put a layer of small rocks on top to finish. You can put as much "decoration" in as you want. since the fairy gardens are so popular there is plenty to choose from. Water enough to dampen everything. If it has a lid you will want to take it off for a while every few days or so, especially if you're getting condensation. You don't want it in the sun as the glass will intensify the heat. I have used pepperomias, ivy and even succulents in containers that are a little more open. For the rock, you can get small bags of nice rock at the dollar store, home depot or even the aquarium rock from the pet store.

My first container was a round fish bowl. I bought a clear glass bowl at a thrift store and turned it upside down for a lid.

  • Start in any fish department and get an inexpensive glass bowl. Then head on over to the aquarium rock section, pick what looks good to you. Also pick up some sand. You will need some good bagged soil and a few plants too. Then head home and start assembling! Add embellishments that make you happy!
