Tannin bleed through oak kitchen cupboards, will oil cover?

I used General Finishes purported to cover oak and not have bleeding. Two years later, do I have to sand off paint or can I put on an oil primer and oil paint to cover?

Hello Rhonda; It sounds like that you will need to take the doors off, and sand off the paint.

However; before you do that, Please ask a local handyman to come over and take a look...This should be free. Please see what he says about the cabinets, and what he thinks should be done.

I mention this, as I am afraid that by using and oil primer, and then oil paint that it still could bleed through, and you do not need to have to go through all of the troubles, associated with such a mess!!!

I hope that this helps you!! Good Luck!!

Is your General Finishes paint latex or oil? If it's latex, you can't paint oil over it. However, if you have to repaint, there are many good latex primers that will work. I like Kilz, but many other people like Zinsser 123. Many latex paints these days have a primer built into the product, so that's another option.

If your General Finishes paint is oil go ahead and use the oil based primer and paint.

Apparently you didn't prime. Remove the doors and hardware. Just lightly sand to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123 or BIN. Then use acrylic paint. Seal with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane. Doesn't yellow. Use a foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

Sand off completely and reprim then repaint.

I would try using a Kilz Primer to prevent the bleed through.
