I don't know where you are but are your neighbor's lawns all green and yours is not? Overfertilizing a lawn may cause patches of grass to burn, which looks similar to the brown patch disease. Absence of a smoke ring helps indicate the patch is not fungal in origin. Overwatering a lawn will create brown patches also, especially if the water causes flooding of the lawn, which may cause root damage.
Grass in my area turns brown without watering, but to conserve water, we just let the grass go thirsty...it turns instantly green when we get rain. We reassessed our priorities and grass rated the lowest.
What part if the country do you live in and what type of grass is it?
Perhaps you may need to do a soil test to see if the soil needs amending, or see if the grass pulls up like turf (could be grubs in that case), or if have pets or neighborhood strays using your lawn as a bathroom, THAT could cause brown spots, too ... there are so many reasons you could be getting them.
