Hellebore pruning-Just how much can I cut them back?

This past season most of my Hellebores have grown incredibly long flower stalks. It us time now for me to "cut them back", along with the old and leathery leaves, of which there are hardly any. Just how much can I cut them back, and how many of the old leaves can I eliminate? I have never experienced this in all of my years of growing them .
thanks for your input and feedback. 🤗

I live in the UK and every year I cut off the flowers

down to about 2 inches also the leathery leaves.

The new shoots then have space

    to grow.

Thank you very much. In the past, I have always cut off the old leathery leaves and the faded blossoms. But this past year the flower stalks have grown up to 14-16", with many

small leavelets on the side. Hence my confusion.
