I used to plant against the chain type fence. They will climb that fence. I also planted 4o'clocks between the morning glories so I had flowers all day. I never had them spread into the yard.

Even with something to climb, morning glories can take over without management. You'll need to prune them back before they go to seed in the fall, or they will self-seed and you could have morning glory plants growing as far as the seeds can (and will) travel. But don't worry about it too much. It takes awhile for the seed pods to form, and even then they're pretty tough little pods until they're completely dry...so by the next spring they're ready to break open, and spread their glory. ;) I've gathered seed pods (therefor preventing self-sowing) in the winter probably as many times as I have in the early spring. Just do it when it's convenient for you, as long as it's before they get fully dry. Also, you can prune back an over-grown plant in mid-season if it's getting too large in the area where it's growing. Just wait until the flowers are "resting" at night, and cut the vines where you need to ...basically giving it something of a haircut.
