I would think you could use acrylic paints then seal them with a good outdoor sealing product. I don't know what brands you have in the UK, but you should be able to talk to the people where you would buy it to find a good brand.

Use an outdoor enamel paint and seal with a marine varnish.
If you want a particular color use porch and deck enamel. Most varnish will dry clear.
Ive been decorating stones for my patio for the last month, using acrylic paints, and sharpie paint pens.. and then spraying them with clear outdoor spray (rustoleum) .. they are holding up well in the pouring rain we've been having
Acrylic paints work great for that type of application. I don't even spray with them with clear coat. I paint strawberry decoys and vegetable markers. They tend to last two years without a clear coat.
